Just Ducky

"Just Ducky"
original oil painting on linen, 8x10 inch
copyright 2009 MaryAnn Cleary

It seems like it has bee quite a while since posting on my blog or even painting. The above painting is an attempt at getting back at it. After taking a month or two off and trying to figure out what it is that I love to do, I am hitting the canvas head on. My plan is to work not only on my conte/charcoal drawings, but also try to gain skill and confidence in my oil painting. I love playing with colors and edges so that they become lost & found, hard and soft. Doing so can really bring life to the artwork. Practice, practice and more practice.

My first real attempt on just focusing on edges was the PB & J sandwich painting. Squinting really helps define those areas that seem to blur with the background and those that are crisp and very defined. The above painting really gave me "fits" after not painting for a few weeks. Goodness! Taking a break is NOT recommended. I wiped off the first attempt and almost wiped this one off, too. However, sometimes it is good to see where one has been to measure any future improvement.

The past few weeks, I did not do much painting, but I did complete a commission piece in charcoal and conte. A pet portrait. I had fun with it and that one I will post tomorrow.

Lesson learned....don't take breaks away from painting.

It looks like my PB&J painting made the FAV15% on the Fine Art Studio November 2009 competition. Yipee!
